HOLD FAST
“The Urgency of Spiritual Steadfastness”
“Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.”
— Revelation 3:11
In His letter to the church in Philadelphia, Jesus issues a command wrapped in both promise and warning. Speaking to a faithful yet vulnerable church, He declares words that still echo urgently to believers in every generation: “Hold fast.” This is not passive advice it is a decisive call to active, vigilant stewardship of the spiritual life entrusted to us.
I. The Command to Cling
“Hold That Fast Which Thou Hast”
This is a call to conscious, determined perseverance. What we “have” is not insignificant it is the faith once delivered, the truth of the gospel, spiritual victories already won, and a living relationship with Christ. These are divine treasures to be guarded deliberately, cherished fiercely, and protected from loss through neglect, complacency, compromise, or fear.
“And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.”
— 1 Corinthians 9:25
The Christian life requires disciplined endurance, fueled by eternal purpose.
II. The Consequence of Carelessness
“That No Man Take Thy Crown”
The crown symbolizes victory, eternal reward, and divine approval promised to the overcomer. Jesus’ warning makes clear that reward is not preserved by intention alone it must be guarded by perseverance. The danger comes from external pressures such as false teaching, persecution, and distraction, as well as internal threats like unbelief, sin, weariness, and spiritual drift.
“Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.”
— James 1:12
Endurance is the pathway to the crown.
III. The Context of Hope
“I Come Quickly”
This command is energized by the promise of Christ’s imminent return. Our steadfastness is not driven by fear, but by hope-filled anticipation. We hold fast not merely to survive, but to remain faithful as we wait for the Bridegroom. The word “quickly” reminds us that our trials are temporary, but our reward is eternal.
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness…”
— 2 Timothy 4:7–8
A life that holds fast ends in glory.
Closing Exhortation
Today, Christ still speaks: Hold fast. Examine what you have received in Him. Strengthen your grip through prayer, Scripture, obedience, and fellowship. Do not allow the pressures of this world to pry your hands from eternal truth. He is coming soon and for those found faithful, a crown of glory awaits, one that can never be taken away.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You who are faithful and true, strengthen my heart to hold fast to what You have entrusted to me. Guard me from distraction, compromise, and spiritual weariness. By Your Spirit, help me to endure, to remain vigilant, and to finish my course with joy. As I wait for Your return, anchor my soul in truth and empower me to stand firm until the end. Amen.
