DAY 84-THE WITHERING OF JOY

“The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men.”
Joel 1:12 (KJV)

WHEN THE SOUL ENTERS A SEASON OF DROUGHT

The prophet Joel paints a picture that struck terror in the hearts of his agricultural society a total collapse of life’s support system. The vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, the palm all withered. No fruit. No harvest. No sustenance.

But Joel was not merely describing an ecological disaster; he was unveiling a spiritual tragedy. When the land dried up, joy dried up with it. When the crops failed, the hearts of men failed.

Today, though many of us are far removed from farming, we understand spiritual drought. We know what it means to pray without fire, worship without tears, and serve without joy. Joy can wither not suddenly, but slowly when the soul is starved of God’s presence.

Joel’s message is therefore both a warning and a loving call:
Inspect the condition of your heart.

I. WITHERED JOY IS A SPIRITUAL SYMPTOM

Beloved, the withered trees were symptoms, not the root problem. They revealed a deeper crisis a people drifting away from God.

In the same way, a persistent absence of joy is rarely accidental. When joy disappears, something has been interrupted in our spiritual ecosystem. The flow of prayer weakens. Worship becomes routine. Obedience is delayed or negotiated.

We begin to look for joy in temporary crops:
• Achievements
• Possessions
• Human approval
• Relationships

Yet these cannot sustain the soul.

The Psalmist shows us God’s original design:

“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”
— Psalm 1:3

Joy withers when we are no longer planted by the river.

PRAYER – DIAGNOSIS

Lord, search my heart.
Reveal where my joy began to fade.
Expose every broken connection between my soul and Your presence.
I refuse spiritual dryness in Jesus’ name. Amen.

THE CAUSE: JOY WITHERS WHEN WE NEGLECT THE TRUE VINE

Trees do not wither by choice they wither when cut off from their source.

Jesus makes this unmistakably clear:

“I am the vine, ye are the branches… for without me ye can do nothing.”
John 15:5

Joy is not self-generated. It flows from abiding. When we detach ourselves—through neglect, self-sufficiency, or sin we begin to dry up internally.

We may still appear active, but we are no longer fruitful. We strive, but there is no lasting joy because the effort is disconnected from Christ.

The prophet Isaiah reminds us of God’s provision:

“Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.”
Isaiah 12:3

If joy is absent, it may be because we stopped drawing from the well.

PRAYER – RECONNECTION

Lord Jesus, True Vine of my soul,
I repent of every way I have lived independent of You.
Reconnect me to Your life-giving presence.
Let Your joy flow back into my spirit.
I choose to abide in You again. Amen.

THE REMEDY: RETURNING TO THE GOD OF RESTORATION

Joel’s prophecy does not end in devastation it ends in hope.

God’s heart is not to leave His people barren, but to restore what was lost:

“And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten…”
— Joel 2:25

The remedy for withered joy is not pretending everything is fine, nor chasing artificial happiness. The remedy is repentance and return a deliberate turning back to God.

This is why David cried:

“Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.”
— Psalm 51:12

Joy is restored where humility meets mercy.

God sends the latter rain to revive dry ground. He specializes in resurrection making dead places bloom again.

PRAYER

Father, I return to You with all my heart.
Restore the joy of my salvation.
Let the rain of Your Spirit fall upon every dry place in my life.
Heal what has withered. Revive what has died.
I receive restoration now, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

FINAL EXHORTATION: DO NOT SETTLE FOR A WITHERED LIFE

Beloved, is your joy withered today?
Do you feel spiritually dry fruitless, weary, empty?

Hear both the warning and the hope in Joel’s words. God exposes the dryness not to shame us, but to heal us.

Do not settle for survival when God offers abundance.

Do not accept dryness when God promises rain.

Return to the True Vine.
Abide in His Word.
Seek the refreshing presence of the Holy Spirit.

Our God still makes deserts blossom.
He still restores joy to the broken.

DECLARATION

I will not live with withered joy.
I am planted by the rivers of living water.
My joy is restored, my soul is revived,
and the joy of the Lord is my strength
