THE PRIVILEGE AND RESPONSIBILITY OF SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING
“He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.” — Matt. 13:11
Have you ever been entrusted with a secret? It creates a sense of intimacy, privilege, and responsibility. In this passage, Jesus’ disciples are puzzled and ask, “Why speak in parables to the crowds?” Jesus’ answer is both stunning and sobering: there is a divine distinction between those who merely hear and those who truly understand.
Today, let us explore what it means to be granted access to “the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven.”
I. The Reality of the Mystery — Divine Revelation
The mysteries of the Kingdom are not riddles to decode but revealed truths about God’s redemptive plan through Christ. These mysteries are not attained by human intellect but unveiled by the Holy Spirit.
Paul writes,
“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God…because they are spiritually discerned.” — 1 Cor. 2:14
Spiritual understanding is a supernatural gift and cannot be grasped apart from the Spirit’s illumination.
II. The Requirement of the Mystery — A Receptive Heart
Jesus used parables to reveal truth to those whose hearts were open. A distracted, hardened, or shallow heart hears but cannot perceive. God gives insight to those who humbly seek Him.
Hebrews declares,
“But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age…who have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Heb. 5:14
Spiritual maturity grows as we engage, obey, and apply God’s truth consistently.
III. The Root of the Mystery -A Gift of Grace
Jesus says the knowledge “has been given to you.” Understanding is not earned through spiritual performance; it is a gracious gift given to those who receive it in humility.
Peter reminds us,
“But ye are a chosen generation…that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.” — 1 Pet. 2:9
We are chosen not merely for privilege but for purpose: to proclaim the light we have received.
IV. The Responsibility of the Mystery Stewardship of Truth
The revelation entrusted to us is not for selfish preservation. With revelation comes responsibility. We are called to live out the truth, share it faithfully, and bear fruit.
Jesus warns,
“Take heed therefore how ye hear…” — Luke 8:18
This warning calls believers to guard their hearts and steward spiritual understanding diligently.
Our Response
Let us respond with:
• Gratitude, recognizing revelation as divine grace not personal merit.
• Guarded hearts, resisting distraction, pride, or worldliness.
• Faithful stewardship, living and speaking in ways that draw others to the mystery of Christ.
May our lives reflect the glory of the Kingdom we have been invited into.
